Lately we have been exploring the ways that educators can make learning accessible for all students (UDL) through the use of various resources. Assistive technologies are often a necessary component that can assist educators in meeting this goal, especially for students with disabilities.
According to atinternetmodules.org, AT devices include any special equipment or technology that children may need to help them participate in school. While exploring the
Modules for School Age, I was able to deepen my understanding of three important components:
AT Assessment Process in the School Environment
When thinking about using AT in the classroom, I learned it is most important that it will accomodate the needs of that student. This module outlined the following assessment steps that will assure that the most appropriate AT will be considered for each child:
As a classroom teacher my involvement in this process is extremely important. My knowledge of the student's strengths and needs are critical when determining if AT is necessary or appropriate.
AT Consideration in IEP Process
Here I learned that the IEP team has a great opportunity to remove barriers and enhance student learning by determining whether or not assistive technology is needed. This is done through identifying students strengths and needs, required school tasks, current accomodations being provided, and the possible AT devices or services that would provide a solution. As a teacher I understand the importance of making learning accessible for all students. Under IDEA, IEP teams are also required to consider the need for assistive technology.
Automatic Speech Recognition
Automatic Speech Recognition or ASR, allows an individual to control a computer using speech. In this portion of the module I learned that ASR has made many advances lately and can be very beneficial to people with physical and learning disabilities. However, the environment in which it is being used should be taken into consideration because background noise can disturb the effectiveness of the software. I never considered these various ways that ASR could assist students in my classroom:
