IEP Considerations and Assistive Technology

In my recent blog post, “Assistive Technology Internet Modules”, I briefly discussed considering the use of AT when developing an IEP. (IDEA) or “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act” mandates that IEP teams consider each student’s need for assistive technology devices and services. During this process, the IEP team reviews the student’s goals and objectives and makes the best decision regarding the need for assistive technology to reach those goals and objectives. Unless there is an AT specialist on the IEP team making the considerations, it is sometimes difficult to determine the need for AT. If this is the case, it may be necessary to conduct an AT assessment. Additionally, QIAT (Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology-pronounced “quiet”) has developed a list of helpful guidelines for considering assistive technology that can be used by IEP teams to assist in the considerations. See the list of guidelines here!
